Fabio Quartararo heads into the final round of the MotoGP season with the conviction and goal of maintaining the streak of good results. Next up is the Valencia GP, at the newly resurfaced Circuit Ricardo Tormo.

After two top-five finishes and a seventh place in the last three rounds, the Monster Energy Yamaha rider stated that he hopes to have a good pace again in Valencia—where he holds positive expectations regarding the new tarmac:

My race pace in Qatar was really good. I hope that it will be like that in Valencia too. Last year didn’t go too bad there. I think this year we might be able to do well again. We have to keep a positive mindset and keep the good results going until the end of the season. I think the new surface in Valencia will be good. I heard there’s a lot of grip now, so hopefully we can make a great Sprint and Race.

Fabio Quartararo finished the MotoGP Qatar Grand Prix in seventh place, keeping his streak of top-ten results. However, he wasn’t particularly pleased with his performance in yesterday’s race at Losail.

The Monster Energy Yamaha rider mentioned that he did the best he could, feeling faster than the day before but struggling to fully showcase that competitiveness:

It was a good race, a great start – it wasn’t like Saturday. But even if I felt faster than on Saturday, but on Saturday was easier to make the lap time. But it was our pace, it was the best race we could do. Then, in the last laps, to overtake Álex [Márquez] was really, really difficult. I was faster, but I couldn’t do it. I think we can be happy with our race.

One of the riders who was behind Jorge Martín and eventually overtook him in the MotoGP Qatar GP race was Fabio Quartararo. The 2021 champion spent some time behind the Prima Pramac rider when the Spaniard was clearly facing significant difficulties before Quartararo managed to pass him.

The French rider told the press that he isn’t aware of the reasons behind Martín’s performance issues but believes there was undoubtedly some kind of issue:

He was struggling. He was not riding like yesterday. I don’t know which was the problem, but of course he wasn’t the same Jorge as yesterday. For sure he had a big issue, because you don’t make this kind of race less than 24 hours after. So for sure he had an issue. When I overtook him I wanted to be sure, because I didn’t want to make a mess, but he was struggling more than yesterday. The way he rides, I was faster. Yesterday I wasn’t faster than him and today I felt worse than yesterday. So I think the difference was big. But I think it’s not me that I tell you the correct answer.

Fabio Quartararo topped the second free practice of the Qatar MotoGP Grand Prix. In a session where lap times were not the main focus, but rather race preparations, the 2021 champion consistently stayed at the front from the outset.

The initial leader was Raúl Fernández (CryptoDATA RNF MotoGP Team/Aprilia), ahead of Aleix Espargaró (Aprilia). Quartararo took over the lead, stronger than Álex Márquez (Gresini/Ducati) on their second attempts. Márquez later crashed at turn two, without major consequences, and was surpassed by teammate Fabio di Giannantonio.

As Quartararo managed to strengthen his lead, the same couldn’t be said for his pursuers, as Miguel Oliveira (CryptoDATA RNF MotoGP Team/Aprilia) briefly reached second place. However, he was later surpassed by Franco Morbidelli (Monster Energy Yamaha). Yamaha’s top position was eventually taken by Aleix Espargaró towards the end of the first quarter of the session.

A new change in the lead occurred with less than five minutes until the checkered flag, when Quartararo clocked in 0.073s faster than Aleix Espargaró. At the same time, Jorge Martín (Prima Pramac/Ducati) matched the lap time of the Spaniard, ultimately finishing second. Di Giannantonio finished fourth, 0.126s behind Quartararo, with Morbidelli in fifth. Further down the order, championship leader Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati) secured the tenth spot with his final lap.

The Asian leg of the MotoGP season is being positive for Fabio Quartararo, who got some of his best results of the year so far – including two third places – during this period. Now, the Monster Energy Yamaha rider wants to close this phase of the season in the best way possible at the Qatar GP.

The 2021 world champion said to the press that he is coming optimistic to this weekend: ‘Basically the Asian round was quite good, with good results – apart from Australia, where I really felt bad on the bike, all the results were good. So of course I’m optimistic and hopefully we can finish in the top five/top six – it would be great in this track’.

Asked if he has to be aggressive in the first lap of the races, Quartararo explained that the most important is to go directly to Q2 from the Friday’s practice: ‘You always push yourself at the limit from the beginning, but especiaally the goal of every weekend now is not even the qualifying – is to be on the Q2 from Friday. Because if you check, many, many times in Q1 the lap times are super, super fast. The lap time that [Fabio] Di Giannantonio did in Q1 [at Sepang] was 1m57.8s and in Q2 if you did 1m57.8s you would be fifht or sixth. So, the most important is to be ready from Friday afternoon’.

Fabio Quartararo had a promising start to the final sequence of three Grand Prixes in the MotoGP season, finishing fifth in Malaysia after showing speed throughout the practices. Now, the Monster Energy Yamaha rider is gearing up for the Qatar GP.

Following a satisfactory performance in Sepang, the 2021 champion enters the Losail round with a clear ambition and motivation to outperform his performance on the same circuit last year:

I made a better start in the Malaysian GP Race and I‘m pretty happy with how fast I was throughout that weekend. Being able to fight with other riders and take another top-5 finish was great. But now we have to focus on the next GP. It‘s been a while since we last rode in Qatar. The Race in 2022 didn‘t go as well as we had hoped, but we have the motivation to get a better result this year.

The Frenchman emphasized that the upcoming season will be crucial for the Iwata-based manufacturer, emphasizing the need to make the best possible use of any concessions that may come into effect:

At the end it’s important for us, first of all to have a sattelite team. If we have the concessions, we have to use them really well, because I don’t think we’ll have them for so long. I think if we have it for half an year or one year will be a lot, so we have to use it a lot and I think it will be the most important year for Yamaha. So hopefully they can really take the benefit of these concessions and it will be important also for us.

The MotoGP Malaysian Grand Prix once again posed challenges in managing the minimum tyre pressure limit, with several riders receiving warnings for violating it. Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha) doesn’t likes the rule, even warning about the risk of having tires operating with excessively high pressures.

Confronted with the fact that in the next season, violating the tyre pressure regulations will result in disqualification, the French rider criticized the rule: ‘I think it’s pretty stupid, because it’s already difficult for us to overtake. If you put this like a disqualification I think it’s… it’s not even for safety, I don’t know why they make this kind of limitation. If you want to make it for safety, now it’s 1.87bar; put 1.80bar. Even if you go 1.75bar the tyre won’t explode. So, I don’t know why they made this regulation’.

And Quartararo emphasized that having the pressure too high can also be dangerous: ‘I think we have to talk deeply, because it’s also dangerous to have the pressure high. On the Sprint race I made a bad start, but you don’t ride your bike; it’s a totally different bike and at the end your bike holds on two tyres, so if your tyres are not working well, the bike totally changes’.

The French rider believes he achieved the best possible result given the competitiveness of the four riders who finished ahead of him. However, he still considers that his performance could have been better

I think I could do a better one. I just struggled to overtake Jack [Miller], it took me so long. But at the end I’m pretty happy with how fast I was this weekend. Of course I could make a little better, but the position would have been the same. P5 was the best and I couldn’t make any better. The four Ducati in front were strong all the weekend.

Fabio Quartararo was Yamaha’s best man at the Malaysian GP and got again on the five fastest riders on track. He wasted a lot of time until reaching and overtaking Jack Miller, he considered, and recalled that, only when opponents are having issues with the tyres, he gets to overtake.

The french looked at his race, and regretted the time lost until he got to reach the top five: ‘The start was better than on saturday and that was important. Unfortunately I spent a lot of time behind Jack Miller and that cost me a lot of time. I don’t think that would have made for a better final result, but I think we could have finished a lot closer to the top 4’, quoted on Canal+.

Even so the results left the rider happy, with him already looking at something similar in Losail: ‘Still, we’re satisfied with the result and I hope that for Qatar we’ll be able to make another top 5. But … Unfortunately, as always, we’re finding it hard to overtake; you can only overtake when they’ve simply run out of tyres. We’ve managed to manage things better, but I think it’s important that until the last race, Yamaha look carefully at where we need to improve’.

And looked at the overall picture: ‘We finished 15 seconds behind the leader, which is no mean feat either and even though I think we rode a very good race, we’re 15 seconds behind the leader and that hurts. So the result is very important – a top 5 finish was really the aim, but now we need to find a solution to get a lot closer and more consistent’.
