Joey Savatgy emerged victorious in the Abu Dhabi round of the World Supercross Championship (WSX), which was the second of three events this season. The race took place at the Etihad Arena on Yas Island this Saturday.

Delivering a consistently strong performance, Savagty (Rick Ware Racing/Kawasaki) secured the top spot in his heat and finished second in the first main event. This happened right after Vince Friese (MotoConcepts/Honda) was penalized due to an incident with Dean Wilson (Fire Power Honda). Savatgy then clinched a fourth-place finish in the second race and secured second place in the third race. These results propelled him to claim the overall win and establish himself at the top of the championship standings. He currently holds a five-point lead over Ken Roczen.

The German rider, competing for Pipes Motorsports on a Suzuki, encountered a significant setback in the first race crashing while battling for the win. He ultimately finished 14th. However, he rebounded in the second race to take third place. In the final race of the Abu Dhabi round, Roczen secured the win, which helped minimize the gap between him and Savatgy. The second main race held in Yas Island was won by Wilson, who is currently third in the championship standings, trailing the leader by 16 points.

During the Los Angeles SMX event, Dean Wilson experienced a harrowing crash that he described as feeling like being hit by a train. The incident, which was captured on video, shows Wilson being thrown into the air after his bike’s front end tucked in unexpectedly during the first lap of the second moto. The suddenness of the crash caught Wilson off guard, and he was visibly shaken by the impact.

In a social media post, Wilson expressed his frustration and disappointment over the accident. He stated, “Yup I’m flying through the air; this is not good. My 2nd moto crash first lap tucked the front end so fast & tossed me. God, I’m so mad at myself. This crash cost me about 30k. Lucky it was sand & I’m all good. I feel like a train hit me.”

Dean Wilson

The crash’s aftermath was not only physically taxing but also financially burdensome for Wilson, who estimated the incident’s cost at around $30,000. Despite the severity of the crash, Wilson was fortunate to escape without any major injuries, thanks in part to the sandy terrain that cushioned his fall.

Fans and followers of Wilson expressed their relief and support in the comments, glad that he emerged relatively unscathed from such a dramatic accident. The video of the crash, shared by Wilson on his Instagram account, serves as a stark reminder of the risks and challenges faced by professional motocross riders.

Justin Barcia, a prominent figure in the Troy Lee Designs Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing team, encountered a dramatic turn of events during the Los Angeles race on Saturday night. The 450SMX moto one saw Barcia momentarily leading the pack, only to be involved in a severe crash that led to a red flag being raised. The immediate aftermath of the fall was concerning, as Barcia appeared to be in significant discomfort while medical personnel attended to him.

More than two days post the incident, Barcia took to social media to update fans and followers about the extent of his injuries. He stated,

“Shit happens! We don’t know why but it all happens for a reason. Definitely down but not out! I am beyond excited for 2024. Currently, I have a few broken ribs, a bad broken collarbone, a beat-up lung, and a bit of air in my chest. Once the air clears its way out then we can get surgery and on the recovery train. Thanks for all the support.”

Justin Barcia

The broken collarbone is particularly concerning, given that Barcia had previously faced complications with a collarbone injury he sustained in Nashville in April. However, with Anaheim 1 being 102 days away, there’s a silver lining as Barcia has some time to recover and get back to his top form. Before his injury, Barcia had showcased commendable performance, notably clinching victory at the East Rutherford in the 2023 Monster Energy Supercross.

Earlier in the year, Barcia had signed a two-year extension with the Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing team, ensuring his place in the team’s future. Alongside him, Pierce Brown will also be returning for the final year of his contract. The team will also welcome Ryder DiFrancesco, as they continue their pursuit of the coveted supercross title.

The AMA Supercross and Motocross season has officially concluded with the completion of the SuperMotocross World Championship (SMX). As the off-season begins, riders and teams will take a brief hiatus to recuperate and strategize before diving into intensive supercross training camps in the upcoming month. With October on the horizon, the motocross community is poised to witness riders transitioning between teams and announcing new affiliations.

In a significant development, Levi Kitchen expressed his gratitude to the Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing team for their unwavering support over the past three years. This acknowledgment also confirmed his exit from the factory Yamaha team. Kitchen, hailing from Washougal, Washington, became an official member of the team in December 2020. He had previously showcased his prowess in racing with backing from the Rock River team. Kitchen’s professional debut was marked at the 2021 RedBud National, where he secured the 12th position overall. His accolades include winning both the Open Pro Sport and 250 Pro Sport titles at the Monster Energy AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch. This achievement also earned him the 2021 Nicky Hayden AMA Motocross Horizon Award.

Kitchen’s rookie year in 2022 was marred by injuries, limiting his appearances. However, he was honored with the 2022 Marty Smith Rookie of the Year award in Pro Motocross. The 2023 season witnessed a resurgence in Kitchen’s performance, with him finishing third in the 2023 250SX West Region championship, fifth in the AMA Pro Motocross Championship’s 250 Class, and fourth in the 250SMX World Championship standings. His prowess was further highlighted when he clinched the moto win in the final 250SMX moto of the year at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Kitchen wrote, “I want to give a huge thank you to the whole @starracingyamaha team for everything they’ve done the past 3 years. We’ve accomplished a lot and had a lot of fun while doing it. I personally want to thank Bobby and his wife Loretta for believing in me and helping me start my career as a pro. I also would like to thank @swanie387 for putting up with me and pushing me all these years. Lastly, a big thanks to all of the mechanics and people that have helped in any way throughout my time with the team. ❤

During his tenure with Yamaha, Kitchen achieved four AMA Motocross overall podiums and four AMA Supercross 250SX main event podiums. His most notable victory was at the 2023 Anaheim 2 Supercross, marking his first professional win.

While no official announcements have been made, the motocross grapevine suggests that Kitchen might join the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki team in 2024. Kitchen has also accumulated enough points during the 2023 AMA Supercross and Motocross seasons to secure a national number. It’s anticipated that he will choose #47, his amateur number. An official announcement regarding Kitchen’s future endeavors and national numbers is eagerly awaited in the coming weeks.
